At Words Work Literacy Society, our community adult learning programs provide innovative and equitable learning opportunities for adults living in Athabasca and the surrounding region.

Our learner-centered approach and respect for the adult learner’s experience, motivation and self-esteem create a welcoming and encouraging environment.

We know that adult learners have a reason for their learning, such as reading, writing, and communicating in English, upgrading basic skills to find employment or knowing how to use their phone or computer to communicate with friends and family.

Our team of supportive staff, facilitators and volunteer tutors create a positive learning experience to help adult learners build their skills and meet their goals.

We offer one-on-one or group classes covering:

  • Reading and Writing

  • Math and Money

  • Oral Communication

  • English Language Learning

  • Basic Computers and Smartphones

We also support lifelong learning with our family literacy program,  Rhymes That Bind.

Our Learning Centre is open Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from September through June. It is located on the lower level of the Town of Athabasca offices, in downtown Athabasca.

WHAT IS LITERACY AND WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?

Literacy is the ability to identify, understand, interpret, create, communicate and use printed and written materials. This can include environmental literacy, such as recognizing signs, and critical literacy, which is a thinking skill that involves questioning and examining ideas.

Literacy is connected to everything that we do: at home, at work and in the community.

Literacy skills impact our health, life satisfaction, employment and engagement in the world around us.

ACTIVITIES

What We Do

We help adults build their skills, gain confidence and meet their goals with a heart-centered, dignity-focused approach to learning. We do this through one-on-one tutoring, group classes and family literacy programs. We also offer learner supports like access to computers and wi-fi, help filling out forms and a lending library. All this in a safe and welcoming learning space.
